The Hipster Trend is Over

Published on 13 Sep 2010 at 4:15 PM

This article explains everything perfectly- but a song parodying the subculture of ironic losers might be more useful to those that don’t like reading long articles. Video taken from Spare Room.

NZ Drum & Bass

When you’re having a busy week, I find the best way to combat tiredness is to attach headphones and play drum and bass at the maximum volume level. It’ll get you going faster than coffee!

Internet Withdrawals…

Published on 17 Aug 2010 at 4:38 PM

Because our largest telecommunications service provider was busy rewiring our neighbourhood for faster broadband, my house hasn’t had internet for five days. Now that’s it’s turned on, everyone in the household is using up the broadband like crazy to catch up on downloads, etc that we all missed out on. So I’m still here, just trying to catch up!

I’m assuming the role of DJ today and playing one of my favourite nostalgia songs- from the 90’s hip-hop girl group Moizna. I didn’t hear this song till late 2000 at 2am on what used to be my favourite radio station (until they became sell-outs). I loved their music, and five years ago I found this single on an American website, so I bought it and it’s part of my NZ CD collection. Listen, love and find more of their songs on Youtube.

Vampires and Self Control

Published on 5 Jul 2010 at 8:27 PM

It’s no secret that I despise anything vampire related. But I love the Dukes, their tunes are so upbeat it’s hard not to smile afterwards.

I also like the tilt-shift effect they use on their music video Self Control.

Fashion Muse- Aaradhna

Published on 22 Jun 2010 at 4:51 PM

AaradhnaAaradhnaAaradhna

Aaradhna has three things I admire: Long flowing hair, a love of big earrings, and an amazingly talented voice. I was watching a DVD with the first 10 years of Dawn Raid on Sunday and it has all her old music videos on it. So even though she’s not a recent muse she has been in the past.

Aaradhna Jayantilal Patel’s father is Indian, her mother is Samoan and her big break came when she got to sing in front of Dawnraid’s Brotha D while he was at her grandma’s getting his hair braided. She’s almost a mix of Beyonce and Amerie musically- so no wonder she’s over in LA writing, recording, and rubbing shoulders with the A-list of hip-hop!

I would have picked her collaboration with Savage (where she plays the ‘ghetto princess’) or Adeaze (where she’s dressed as a Bollywood diva) as my first video but this is her favourite song and she seems herself in the video- Bright Indian inspired sari and streetwear, plenty of bangles, and of course the statement gold earrings. The love story between her and the Fruit & Vege owner is very sweet too.

Here she goes full Beyonce- with prerequisite stage outfit, performing her heart out with two backup dancers. Her voice is amazing as always but the choreography? Not her strong point.

Like most of our national singers, she jumped the ditch two years ago and started experimenting with dance music (which Aussies are great at). She’s perfect in the genre, and her Indian style jewellery has been replaced with the chunky, African tribal look which is more modern.

So of course we wish her luck in the city of angels chasing her Hollywood dreams- keep doing your thing girl!

Beyoncé as a Jewel Thief

As much as I admire Beyoncé as a singer, I would never buy anything from her Dereon fashion line.

It’s NZ Music Month again, but I’m not really into the new music they’re promoting. So I decided this year I will put up old NZ music that I like. Here’s five songs I could listen to over and over…

She’s A Mod

I love the Mint Chicks (I’m planning on erecting a shrine to Kody Nielson in my wardrobe sometime) and ever since they performed this song at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards this song always pops into my head whenever I want to sleep…it’s a pretty cool song though!
